PG & PhD admissions at NIT, Surathkal

Kochi, May 31, 2012: National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, Surathkal has invited applications for admission to Post Graduate (MTech / MSc) and PhD programmes of the Academic Year 2012-13.

Courses of Study :
NIT Surathkal offers undergraduate programmes in 9 disciplines and post-graduate programmes in 29 specialised areas. The Institute also offers facilities for research leading to PhD degrees in various branches of Engineering, Science and Humanities & Social Sciences. The academic responsibilities are shared by the following 14 Teaching Departments :

3. Chemistry
4. Civil Engineering
5. Computer Science and Engineering
6. Electrical & Electronics Engineering
7. Electronics & Communication Engineering

Minimum Qualification / Eligibility :
A. MTech Programme (Sponsored) : Full time – Two years (Four Semesters)
Admission to a MTech Programme shall be open to candidates who have passed the prescribed qualifying Examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system, or not less than 55% of marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/university examinations conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme). However, this prescribed minimum shall be a
CGPA of 5.0 or 50% marks in the aggregate for SC/ST candidates.

B. MTech (Research) Programme : Full time – Two years (Four Semesters)
A pass in the prescribed qualifying examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.0 OR not less than 60% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public /university
examination conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme) For SC/ST minimum CGPA of 5.5 OR 55% marks in the aggregate. Valid GATE score is essential for scholarship seats.

Admission is based on the Rank / Scores obtained in CAT – 2010 and Group discussion and Interview.

C. MSc Programme : Full time Two years (Four semesters) course:
Eligibility for admission to MSc Programme in:
i. MSc in Chemistry : A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with 60% (or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of atleast 6.0 in the 0-10 scale grading system) of the aggregate in all the years of course of study and with 55% (CGPA of
atleast 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system) in respect of SC/ST candidates.
ii. MSc in Physics : A Bachelor’s Degree in the subject with 60% (or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.0 in the 0-10 scale grading system) of the aggregate in all the years of course of study and with 55% (CGPA of at least
5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system) in respect of SC/ST candidates.

D. PhD Programme
i) Admission to a PhD Programme shall be open to candidates who have passed the prescribed qualifying examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system, or not less than 55% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/university examinations conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme). However, this prescribed minimum shall be a CGPA of 5.0 or 50% marks in the aggregate for SC/ST candidates. The prescribed qualifying examination is as follows:
a. For PhD in Engineering / Technology – Master’s degree in relevant field.
b. For PhD in Science / Humanities, Social Sciences & Management – Master’s degree in relevant field.

ii) Employed professionals having experience and proven competence aspiring for PhD Programme will be considered under part-time scheme (External Registration) and will be allowed to pursue their research at their own location of work. There are five types of student status for PhD programme :
1) Full-time students on Institute Scholarship
2) Full-time sponsored students on QIP/EFIP (AICTE)
3) Full-time/External Registrants sponsored from Industry or other organizations including Educational Institutions
4) Full-time/ External Registrants non sponsored non-scholarship students
5) Internal Registrants sponsored staff of NITK

The prescribed application form and Information Bulletin for MTech (Sponsored and Research) / MSc and PhD can be downloaded from
www.nitk.ac.in. The application form can be duly filled and sent to the Dy. Registrar (Academic), National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, Srinivasnagar, Mangalore -575 025, Karnataka State on or before the last date prescribed 18.06.2012 along with the D.D. of Rs. 500/- (for SC/ST- Rs.150/-) drawn in favour of the Director, N.I.T.K., Surathkal payable at State Bank of India, or Canara Bank, NITK, Campus Branch, Surathkal.

* Last Date for receipt of completed applications : 18.06.2012 (Monday)
* Last date for submitting Applications at the Departments for processing : 22.06.2012 (Friday)
* Preparing preliminary merit-list or short-listing : 27.06.2012 (Wednesday)
* Last date for dispatch of call letters to short-listed candidates, and announcement in the website by respective departments : 29.06.2012 (Friday)
* Selection Test and/or Interview : 09.07.2012 and 10.07.2012
* Publication of provisional selection/merit-list on website by respective departments : 11.07.2012 (Wednesday)
* Last date for Sending admission orders/letters : 13.07.2012 (Friday)
* Reporting Dates for Selection-List Candidates : 11.07.2012 to 20.07.2012
* Last Date for sending admission orders/letters to waiting-list candidates  : 24.07.2012 (Tuesday)
* Last Date for Reporting, for waiting-list candidates : 31.07.2012 (Tuesday)
