Steep Fee hike in Govt SF Engg colleges

June 16, 2012 : In an unexpected move the government of Kerala has increased the annual tuition fee for the 50 pc Government seats in Government Controlled and University Controlled Self financing Engineering Colleges for 2012-13 . Now the fee has been fixed at Rs.35000/-. The existing annual tuition fee in Government seats in Government/University Controlled Self financing Engineering Colleges is Rs.20000/- In the 35% Management seats in these college to be allotted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, the existing fee of Rs.65000/- will continue.

In the 15% seats to be allotted by the Management under the NRI Quota, the annual tuition fee would be Rs.1,00,000/- These seats will also carry an Interest Free Refundable Deposit of Rs.1,25,000/-  There are 23 Engineering Colleges in this category with 9 under IHRD, 7 under CAPE, 2 under LBS Centre and one each under KSRTC, Continuing Education, Kerala University, MG University and Calicut University. The total intake as per the Prospectus is 6465. Of this, around 3232 will be Government seats with a fee of Rs.35,000/ per annum.

It is clear that this move is not only to help the government supported self financing colleges, but to help the private self financing engineering colleges also. Last year when the fees in private SF engineering college seat was Rs 60,000 and the that of govt supported self financing engineering colleges was Rs.20,000 almost all the seats of govt supported SF engg colleges were filled, but around 10,000 seats in private SF engg colleges were not filled.
