Kochi, July 16,2012 : Which are the poor performing private self-financing medical colleges sought by students in the state in the allotment of the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations ? One may wonder why the MCs under ICC are below the bottomline in the first allotment.

In the medical colleges MES medical college is the best performing one while those from the Kerala Christian Professional College Management Federation have fared very badly, joining the CEE’s allotment after a boycott in recent years. The worst performing is Pushpagiri Medical College at 1595, surprisingly lower than relatively not better-off Somervell CSI Medical College, Karakonam at 1575. The rank of the last allotted student at MES is 748. In Amala this is 1415, in Jubilee Mission medical college it is 1142 and in Kolancherry medical college it came down to 1528.

Those who get allotment in MCs under Inter Church Council need pay only only Rs. 1000 at SBT to ensure the seat in the account of CEE which seems to be a kind of manipulation. Anybody can register options in these colleges and abstain from joining the colleges. Since these colleges are below among the entire private medical colleges, there is no chance to get a higher option to these colleges and hence after three four allotments the CEE can return the seats to the managements so the managements can play their trick well even standing with the govt's allotment process.

Caluse 5 of the GO states that the CEE can make a maximum of four allotments to these colleges. The deadline for CEE as per the agreement is Sept 20. CEE will not give any more alloment list to these colleges after this date. The CEE will revert these seats to the colleges and the colleges can make admission to these seats as their management seats, says the GO. So experts can understand the game to be played by ICC.

The name of the other colleges with last ranks are given in detail at the last rank table (given in banner at the home page). One reason for the students opting for the eight medical colleges under the Kerala Private Medical College Management Association is the lower fees in them compared to the fee in Christian medical colleges including Somervell where the fee is Rs 3.75 lakh per annum. It is not surprising that MES Medical college with good infrastructure and faculty and also patients has finished first because in half of the seats where the CEE is making allotment, the fee is Rs 1.5 lakh while the fee for BPL and SEBC category it is Rs 25,000. The Gokulam medical college has 150 seats and the last rank there is 942.

The top performing self-financing engineering colleges in the state in the first allotment of the CEE are Rajagiri Engineering College, Kochi, which joined the CEE’s allotment this year, followed by FISAT, Angamaly, SCMS, Kochi and Vidya Academy, Thrissur.( last ranks in these colleges are under 10,000 in alomost all branches).

In the case of engineering seats fee hasn’t come as a major deterrent for the candidates since there is only a marginal difference. While colleges like SCMS charge Rs 65,000 per year, Rajagiri has Rs 75,000 plus a redundable interest free deposit of Rs 1 lakh. In half of the government quota seats in 100 odd colleges under the Kerala Self-Financing Engineering College Management Associaiton, the fee is Rs 40,000. Some of the financially backward students with better marks, who benefit from this, would opt for such colleges.

It is for the first time in the history of Kerala Entrance Examinations that a refundable interest free deposit is being included in the govt quota alongwith the tuition fees (for engg colleges under catholic managements).
