Forced by HC, NEHU awards Gold Medal to law student Shillong, July 23,2012 : Forced by the high court, the North Eastern Hill University today awarded Gold Medal to a law student who had become topper with first class in his department for 2008 after re-evaluation of his papers. Shatrudhan Upadhaya, a student of city Law College had been placed in second class. None in the department secured first class in that year, university sources said. Dissatisfied with the marks he obtained in Paper XX and XXI of the final year, Upadhaya sought re-evaluation of those papers following which his marks were enhanced and he became the topper with first class, which entitled him a Gold Medal. But Clause 17(9) of NEHU Rules states "No retrospective benefits such as Gold Medal, Scholarship, Fellowship admission, promotion etc., shall accrue to a candidate as a result of re-evaluation." After Upadhaya moved the Shillong bench of the Gauhati High Court, it quashed that rule on June 6 and asked the authorities of the central university to award the student with the Gold Medal. The award was officially given to him today, the sources said. The Court had also directed the NEHU authorities that any other benefits like book prize, rank certificate, etc entitled to Upadhaya under the rules and regulations would have to be given to him within six weeks. |
