K-TET on August 25 ; Apply till Aug 6

July 29, 2012: The General Education Department, Government of Kerala, will conduct the Kerala-Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET), a minimum qualification for appointment as a teacher in Classes I to X, on 25th August 2012. 

One of the essential qualifications for a person to be eligible for appointment as a teacher in any of the schools referred to in clause (n) of section 2 of the RTE Act is that she/he should pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) which will be conducted by the appropriate Government in accordance with the Guidelines framed by the NCTE.

Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET), aims at bringing national standards and benchmark of teacher quality in the recruitment process; inducing teacher education institutions and students from these institutions to improve their performance standards; sending a positive signal to all stakeholders that the Government lays special emphasis on teacher quality etc.

This test will be conducted by Pareeksha Bhavan, Kerala in accordance with the guidelines published by State Council of Educational Research and Training; Kerala (SCERT Kerala) and such other Rules/Regulations/Instructions/Policies laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)/Department of General Education/Govt.of Kerala.

Applicability of K-TET: The details relating to the applicability of the Test is given in Clause 2 of the Prospectus. K-TET shall apply to (i) Schools of the State Government/Local authority referred to in the Service Rules and also sub-clause (i) of clause (n) of Section 2 of the RTE Act, 2009 (ii) Schools referred to in sub clause (ii) of clause (n) of the RTE Act in Kerala and (iii) A school belonging to specified category. A school referred to in sub-clause (iv) of clause (n) of Section 2 of the RTE Act may, for the purpose of Elementary levels, exercise the option of considering either this K-TET or the TET conducted by the Central Government. In Kerala, K-TET is applicable up to HS level.
Categories of Tests: The tests will be held under 3 categories; Category I, Category II & Category III, for those intending to be a teacher for Lower Primary classes, Upper Primary classes and High School classes respectively.

All those satisfying the minimum educational qualifications of a category, are eligible to appear for the test for that category. However, a person who intends and is qualified to appear for K-TET in more than one category (Lower Primary classes, Upper Primary classes & High school classes) can specify this in the application form and appear for the papers meant for these categories.

Minimum Qualification: Category I: (for Lower Primary classes): Applicant should have passed Higher Secondary/ Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and in addition should have obtained either a two year Trained Teachers’ Certificate (TTC) conducted by Board of Examination; Govt. of Kerala or its equivalent or a 2 year Diploma in Education (Special Education) or a 4 year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed). Those who have passed the Higher Secondary/ Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 45% marks and the 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure), Regulations 2002 are also eligible.

A Diploma/Degree course in Teacher Education recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) only shall be considered. However, in case of Diploma in Education (Special Education) and B.Ed. (Special Education), a course recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) only shall be considered.

Category II: (for Upper Primary classes): Applicant should hold B.A / B.Sc / B.Com and 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education/Trained Teachers’ Certificate (TTC) conducted by Board of Examination, Govt. of Kerala or its equivalent OR B.A/ B.Sc/B.Com with at least 50% marks and 1 year B.Ed OR B.A/ B.Sc/ B.Com with at least 45% marks and 1 year B.Ed, in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) regulations issued from time to time in this regard OR Higher Secondary/Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and 4 year Bachelor in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) OR Higher Secondary/ Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks and 4 year B.A/B.Sc.Ed or B.A. Ed or B.Sc.Ed OR B.A / B.Sc / B.Com with at least 50% marks and 1 year B.Ed. (Special Education).

A Diploma/Degree course in Teacher Education recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) only shall be considered. However, in case of Diploma in Education (Special Education) and B.Ed. (Special Education), a course recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) only shall be considered.

Category III: (For High School classes): The test is for HSAs in (i) Malayalam (ii) English (iii) Hindi (iv) Sanskrit (v) Tamil (vi) Kannada (vii) Arabic, (viii) Urdu (ix) Social Science (x) Physical Science (xi) Natural Science and (xii) Mathematics. Those who have acquired a Bachelors Degree in the subject concerned, with not less than 45% marks and a B.Ed. Degree in the subject concerned, from any one of the Universities in Kerala or have acquired these qualifications from any other Universities recognized as equivalent thereto are eligible. For Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology, those who have BSc.Ed Degree in the subject concerned with not less than 50% marks from one of the Regional Institutes of Education sponsored by NCERT will be eligible to apply. For Botany and Zoology, those who have BSc.Ed Degree in Life Science, with not less than 50% marks, from one of the Regional Institutes of Education are also eligible.

Candidates, who have acquired Diploma / Degree in teaching in any subject and are approved by Universities / NCTE / Board of Examinations /Govt. of Kerala, are eligible to apply for K-TET III. They will have to produce the equivalency certificate as recognized by any of the Universities in Kerala/Govt. of Kerala.

Candidates who have acquired their qualifications through recognized correspondence courses/ Open universities should obtain and furnish certificates of recognition and equivalency from any one of the Universities in Kerala.

Candidates admitted in the year 2012 for B.Ed. courses will be permitted to appear for the Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test III 2012 provided they hold a Post Graduate Degree. K-TET III certificates of such candidates will be issued only if they qualify the B.Ed. examinations. Those candidates shall produce the pass certificates, PG certificates and the mark lists for proving their eligibility after qualifying the K-TET III - 2012.

Candidates who have acquired B.Ed Degree and are awaiting results for their Post Graduate course are also eligible to appear for K-TET III. Their certificate will be issued only if they qualify their PG degree.

Relaxation of Minimum marks: SC/ST and Differently-abled candidates will get a relaxation of 5% in minimum qualifying marks.

Scheme/Structure and Content of the Test: The Test for each category will consist of one paper of 90 minutes duration; spread over three parts, with 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), each carrying one mark with four distracters. There will be no negative marking for incorrect answers.

Category I: Paper 1: K-TET –I for Lower Primary Classes: This will be held from 9.30 am to 11 am on 25th August 2012.  It will have in Part I, 30 questions each from Child Development and Pedagogy (relevant to age group 6 to 11), Mathematics and Environmental Studies. There will be 30 questions each in Part II, Language I- Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada and Part III and Language II-English/Arabic (Arabic for those intending to be an Arabic teacher).

Category II: Paper II- K-TET II for Upper Primary Classes: This will be held from 12 noon to 1.30 pm on 25th August 2012. Part I will have 2 sections with section 1 being compulsory for all. It will have 30 questions from Child Development and Pedagogy (relevant to age group 11 to 14). In the second section in this part, the candidate will have to answer 60 questions from  Mathematics and Science (Mathematics and Science Teachers) or from Social Science (Social Science Teachers) or from one of these (any other teacher). Part II will have 30 questions from Language I: Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada/English and Part III will have 30 questions from Language II: (Other than language I): Malayalam/ English/ Arabic/ Hindi/Urdu/ Sanskrit.

Category III: Paper III- K-TET III for High School Teachers: This will be held from 3 pm to 4.30 pm on 25th August 2012. Part 1 will have 40 questions from Adolescent Psychology, Theories of Learning and Teaching Aptitude. Part 2 will have 30 questions from Language- Malayalam/ English/Tamil/ Kannada and Part 3 will have 80 questions from Subject specific areas (Content & Pedagogy). More details on the nature of question for each category are given in the Prospectus.

Syllabus: Syllabus of the K-TET will be available at www.education.kerala.gov.in and www.keralapareekshabhavan.in.

Medium of Question Papers: Questions for Category I and II (except for languages) will be bilingual (Malayalam and English). Question for Category III will be only in English (except for languages).

Qualifying Marks: In all categories, those scoring 60% or more marks in K-TET will be declared to have passed the KTET. However, qualifying K-TET would not confer a right on any person for recruitment/employment as it is only one of the eligibility conditions for appointment. Applicants will have to fulfill other additional qualifications/conditions prescribed from time to time as per State Recruitment Rules, while applying for the said post.

Improvement: A K-TET qualified candidate can appear again for improving his/her score.

Age Limit: No age limit is prescribed for candidates appearing for the K-TET.

Examination Centres: The examination centres will be announced after inviting applications from the candidates. Applicants may select a district/educational district as the centre. The allotted centre of examination will be shown in the Admit card.

Examination Fee: The Exam fee is Rs.500/- for each category. Fee for reserved categories such as SC/ST and differently abled categories is Rs.250/- for each category. Exam fee may be remitted in cash at any of the selected branches of State Bank of Travancore in and out of Kerala using the prescribed chalan that can be downloaded from http://keralapareekshabhavan.in/

Procedure to Apply: Application should be submitted only online at www.keralapareekshabhavan.in. The Prospectus of K-TET 2012 can be downloaded from this website. There are two steps for submitting the application. The first stage is the remittance of the Examination Fee depending on the number of categories selected by the candidate. For this, the applicant must log on to www.keralapareekshabhavan.in. and click on ‘K-TET 2012’ link and then on ‘K-TET Chalan Form’.

Applicant should fill in the required details here and ‘Submit’ when he/she will be able to view three copies of the chalan with the amount to be paid, based on the number of categories applied for. The applicant must take a print out of the chalan and remit the amount in the selected branch of SBT.

After remitting the amount, applicant has to log on to the official website of Pareeksha Bhavan again and click on ‘K-TET 2012’ and then click on ‘K-TET Online Application Form’ to Register for the K-TET. The Application ID and the Application Number provided in the chalan have to be entered here. Subsequently, the application form will appear with the details that have been entered earlier. The vacant windows have to be filled up and the photograph in JPEG format having size less than 30MB, uploaded. After filling up the necessary details, the application form is to be uploaded. Registration has to be done latest by 5 pm on 6th August, 2012.

A print out of the uploaded application form has to be taken. The hard copy/printed copy of the application form, along with the copy of chalan form should reach the ‘Secretary, Pareeksha Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram-695012’ latest by 5 pm on 10th August, 2012. SC/ST/Differently abled candidates should enclose attested copy of Community Certificate/Disability Certificate along with their application. Copies of certificate/ mark list should not be send along with the application. These documents are required only after the results are announced.

Admit Card: The Admit Card for all the eligible candidates will be available in the website of Pareeksha Bhavan from 16th August, 2012.
