Higher education dept to bear tuition fees

Puducherry,Jul 28,2012: The Department of Higher Education today said that the administration would bear tuition fees of students joining privately run engineering colleges under government quota after selection by Centralized Admission Committee in the 2012-13 academic year.

A release from the Department Director G Panneerselvam said today that managements of such colleges should not collect fees from students at the time they join the institutions. The department would straightway remit the fees to the colleges under the government's Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Finance Assistance scheme, as had been ordered by the Chief Minister.

Panneerselvam said only students selected under the government quota and who had passed the qualifying examination in the first attempt would be eligible for the assistance. He said there are 12 privately run engineering colleges in Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam regions. The Fee Committee had fixed the fees ranging between Rs 26,000 and Rs 33,000 for students joining under the government quota.

(A similar order was already passed for students joining privately run medical colleges in the Union Territory under government quota).
