CEED on Nov 25: Apply before Aug 31

August 6, 2012: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has notified the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED), for admission to Postgraduate Programmes in Design at IITs and IISc.

CEED is an all India examination conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India with the objective of assessing a candidate’s aptitude for design, involving visual perception ability, drawing skills, logical reasoning, creativity and communication skills and is the qualifying examination for admission to Postgraduate Programmes in Design at various institutes. They include Master of Design Programmes at IISc Bangalore (Product Design and Engineering); IIT Bombay (Industrial Design; Visual Communication; Animation; Interaction Design and Mobility and Vehicle Design); IIT Delhi (Industrial Design); IIT Guwahati (Design); IIT Kanpur (Industrial Design). GATE qualified candidates will also be considered for admission to the M.Des Programmes at IISc Bangalore and IIT Kanpur.

Admission will also be made to the Ph.D Programmes in Design at IISc Bangalore (http://www.cpdm.iisc.ernet.in) and IIT Bombay (http://www.idc.iitb.ac.in). Details can be had from the respective web sites.

Eligibility: Applicant must have either completed or m must be expecting to complete any of the following examinations, latest by July 2013.

(i) Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Architecture/Design/Interior Design or equivalent (4 years duration after 10+2).
(ii) Professional Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent of 4 years duration after 10+2).
(iii) B.F.A (4 year Professional Programme after 10+2).
(iv) G.D. Art (5 year Programme after 10th) with one year post qualification, professional experience.
(v) Master’s Degree in Arts / Science / Computer Applications.

There is no age limit for appearing for CEED. There is also no restriction on the number of chances an applicant can appear in CEED.

Application Fee: There is no application fee for Female applicants. The application fee for Male applicants is Rs. 1500/- while it is Rs. 750/- for SC/ST/PD Applicants of this category. There are two modes of fee payment, from which one has to be chosen while submitting the application online.

Payment can be made through CITI Bank NEFT, through any Bank. If this option is chosen while filling the application, after filling the Application Form online, a NEFT payment Voucher will be generated along with the Application Printout. It will contain the name and other details of the applicant. The applicant should visit any Bank within India and make the payment. The second option is Net Banking. If this is chosen during filling of the application, the applicant will be directed to the internet banking gateway from where the payment can be made.

Application: CEED Application Form must be submitted online, at www.gate.iitb.ac.in/ceed2013 latest by 31st August, 2012 (Friday) . The instructions and other information regarding filling online application are given at www.gate.iitb.ac.in/ceed2013

Applicants will have to upload photo, signature and other documents during the submission of application. They need not have to send any hard copy. Photograph and signature should be as per the specifications prescribed.

Photograph and signature have to be uploaded as electronic files. Poor quality of photographs submitted will lead to rejection of CEED application, without any refund of the application fees. The photograph must be in colour and must be taken by professional studios. Mobile phone photographs and self composed portraits will not be accepted. Photograph must be taken in a white or a very light background and on a date after 1st June 2012. Face should occupy about 50% of the area in the photograph with a full face view looking into the camera directly.  The main features of the face must not be covered by hair of the head, any cloth or any shadow. Forehead, both eyes open, nose, cheeks, lip, and chin should be clearly visible.

If the applicant normally wears spectacles, glare on glasses is not acceptable in the photo. Glare can be avoided with a slight downward tilt of the glasses or by removing the glasses for the photo shoot. Applicant must not wear spectacles with dark or tinted glasses. Only clear glasses are permitted. The image should be in a JPEG format and also on a standard 4.5 cm x 3.5cm print. Maximum pixel resolution for JPEG: 640×480 (0.3 Mega pixel) and the minimum pixel resolution \permitted is 320 x 240.

Applicant should put signature with a black or dark blue ink on a white paper. The signature should be digitally photographed/image scanned by a professional photo studio and the image got cropped by the studio itself. Only JPEG image formats will be accepted. The maximum pixel resolution for the image is 800 x 300. The minimum pixel resolution for the image is 400 x 150. Mobile phone photographs of signatures will not be accepted.

SC/ST/OBC applicants have to produce valid certificates issued by appropriate authorities. Those who claim PD category should produce Medical Certificate issued by appropriate authority.

Examination: CEED 2013 will be conducted from 9 am to 12 noon on 25th November, 2012 (Sunday) without any break, at Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kolkatta, and Mumbai.

The examination will have two Parts, A and B. Part A will be a computer based test and Part B, a pen-paper based one. All candidates must answer both Parts. Part-A is a screening test, which will be conducted by an online computerized program. Part-B will be evaluated only for candidates who will be short-listed in Part-A based on a minimum cut-off mark decided.

Part B score only will be used for merit list and qualified list for CEED 2013. All the candidates must answer both the parts. The short-listing will take place only during the evaluation stage of the examination, after the examination.

Candidates may attempt any question of the exam (of Part A or Part B) during the given three hour period. There is no requirement to attempt them in any particular sequence. Within the given three hour window, they can choose to spend any amount of time answering Part A (computer) and Part B (pen-paper). Questions to both the parts will be visible on the computer screen any time during the exam.

Candidate have to bring their own pencils of different grades (e.g. H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B etc.), sketch pens, poster colors, and other drawing materials for the examination. No drawing sheets have to be brought.

The question paper will be in English. No specific text book or guide book is recommended for preparation. Candidates may however hone their drawing, rendering, and visualization skills.

Candidates should report to the examination centre, one hour before the scheduled commencement of the examination (at 8 am). This is to register and provide biometric information (thumb impression and photograph) before appearing for the exam. The photograph captured on the day of the exam will be printed on the score card. The seating arrangement will be displayed on the notice board of the examination centre.

Request for change of examination city, after submission of the application, will be accepted till October 25, 2012 with a fee of Rs. 400/- to be paid in the form of Demand Draft in favor of 'IIT Bombay'. Admit card can be downloaded from 2nd November 2012.

Result Declaration: Result will be announced after 10 am on 26th December 2012. CEED results will be mailed only to those candidates who qualify in Part-A and Part-B. For others, the results will be displayed at www.iitb.ac.in/gate. Information provided by the candidates in the application and the results will be shared with the concerned design programmes, and may be used for statistical purposes.

The Score Card is valid for a period of two years from the date of declaration of the results. It cannot be treated as a proof of date of birth, category and disability status.

Duplicate score cards are normally not issued. A candidate needing a duplicate card for a valid reason should send an application to Chairman GATE, IIT Bombay, enclosing a Crossed Demand Draft of Rs. 300/-, drawn in favour of IIT Bombay, payable at Mumbai.

Admissions: Qualifying in CEED, does not guarantee an admission to any Programme. A candidate has to apply to respective institutes for admission and fulfill other requirements such as tests and interviews of the respective institutions for admission.

The announcement for admission to the postgraduate programmes in design will be notified separately by the different institutes, starting from November 2012. Reservation for various categories will be as per Government of India rules applicable at the time of admission.

A limited number of assistantships, based on merit, are available to CEED qualified students, to pursue the programmes. The criteria for postgraduate admission and award of scholarship / assistance are different in different institutes. For more details or any specific queries on admission and programme of any institute, the candidate should contact the concerned head /convener / coordinator.
