Biotechnology and Metallurgy wither away?

Kochi, Aug 13,2012 : It is hightime that the Senates of NITs have a rethinking on continuing with branches like Bio Technology, Metallurgical & Materials , Production, Chemical etc. The vacancy positions at various NITs for spot allotment shows that there are few takers for these branches. It is the Mechanical Engineering branch which leads the position in this year's NIT admission. Then comes Computer Sciences Engineering and Electronics and Communications Engineering.
Electronics and Electricals and even Information Technology had takers this year with only Biotechnology and Metallurgy remain as the most unwanted. After these two, comes Civil Engineering as a surprise with enough vacant seats.
The most demanded NIT this year as per the data available with ccb website is Tiruchirappally NIT. Only a few seats remain there to be filled by spot admssion on August 16 . The aspirant candidates can register online for spot admission for these seats till Aug 14. There are a number of Other State seat vacancies in various NITs, apart from Home State seats to which only the other state candidates will be considered. These vacant seats in Other State quota will not be converted into Home State quota and vice versa.
Experts say that Biotechnology Engineering has little scope in our country whereas BSc and MSc Bio Technology has future. Biotch Engineering does not lead to research. Placement also is dim. If one selects BTech Biotech and decides to go for MTech after graduation, there are only a small number of colleges which teach this subject and so teaching scope also is limitted. |
