Single Girl Child Scholarship for PG studies

August 29, 2012: University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited applications for the ‘Post-Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child’, for academic session 2012-14.

The Scholarship has been instituted with the objectives of supporting the Post Graduate education in non-professional courses only, of such girls, who happen to be the only child in the family and to recognize the value of observance of small family norms, through scholarships for their Post-Graduation education.

Those girls who happen to be the only child in the family, admitted in the first year of a Post-graduate regular non-professional Degree course in any recognized University or a Post-Graduate college during 2012-13 and who are up to the age of 30 years at the time of admission in PG courses are eligible to apply for the Scholarship.

Those admitted in Open Universities and to PG Courses in Distance education mode are not eligible. If a family has one son and one daughter, then the girl child will not be considered for scholarship under the scheme.

Selection will be made by an Expert Committee on the basis of applications which are received through online mode within the stipulated time frame and complete in all respects. 

The scholarship will be awarded for the full duration of a PG course. The value of the Scholarship is Rs.2,000/- p.m, for 10 months in an year, for a period of two years only. No extension of scholarship is permissible beyond two years. No other additional grant will be payable in lieu of hostel charges and medical charges etc. The number of slots for scholarships will be decided every year on the basis of eligible application correct in all respects, received in stipulated time frame in the UGC.

No tuition fees are expected to be charged by Universities/ Colleges/ Institutions covered under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act where such a girl student has taken admission in the first year PG course.

Applications can be submitted only ‘ONLINE’ at http://www.ugc.ac.in/sgc/ during the period from September 3rd to October 3rd, 2012. Online submission interface will be available from 3rd September, 2012. Applications submitted in hard copy will not be entertained or considered for award of scholarship in any circumstances.

The Universities/Colleges/Institutions have to submit a certificate of completion of the Post Graduate course in respect of each student availing scholarship under this scheme. The Universities/Colleges/Institutions will have to submit their utilization certificate in respect of each student availing this scholarship. The grant for second year will be released only on the receipt of Utilization certificate for grant of first year. 

Students under this scheme, desirous of leaving their studies mid-way, without completing Post Graduate Degree course, will have to take prior approval from the UGC by submitting an application along with the justification through the concerned Universities/Colleges/Institution. 

Any student who discontinues the studies without prior approval of the UGC will have to refund the whole amount through DD drawn in favour of ‘Secretary, UGC’. The concerned Institution will be responsible for this.

UGC may terminate scholarship of any student in case of (i) Misconduct of the awardees, if any, reported by the University/College/Institution (ii) Unsatisfactory progress report, if the candidate scores less than 60% marks in the first year of Master’s programme (55% in case of Physically Challenged awardee)  (iii)  Candidates being found ineligible for receipt of the scholarship at a later date in which case the candidate shall face the penal action and will also be liable to refund the entire scholarship amount paid. 

The candidate is required to submit an application in prescribed format, online. Proof of admission to the 1st Year Master’s Degree course in a recognized Indian University covered under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act. A certificate from the College/University where student has taken admission to first year PG Course in the current academic year (prescribed format) and an affidavit on Rs.50/- Stamp paper from the student/parent duly attested by SDM / First Class Magistrate / Gazetted Officer (not below the rank of Tahsildar) (prescribed format) have to be submitted.

University/Institution will have to submit a compiled statement every year,  giving the names of the students selected for the scholarship along with their receipt of scholarship amount, Progress Report after the completion of first year of the award giving percentage of marks obtained by the candidates and Utilization certificate.  

Record of candidates, who are not selected, shall not be preserved beyond three months from the date of declaration of results, on UGC website.
