TN Plus 2 : Girls outshine boys ;
pass percentage up to 84.4 pc
 
Chennai, May 9 :  Girls outshone boys once again in the Plus Two examinations conducted by the Tamil Nadu Government for the academic year 2008 even as the overall pass percentage went up to 84.4 per cent.

Releasing the results, Directorate of Government Examinations Vasanthi Jeevanandam said girls had once again outshone boys with the pass percentage of 87.3 per cent, compared to 81.3 per cent among boys.

The boys, however, improved their overall pass percentage to 81.3 per cent ( 2,26,733 candidates) from 77.4 per cent last year.

The pass percentage for the girls was 87.3 per cent (2,69,761 candidates), higher than 84.6 per cent recorded last year.

The number of candidates securing an aggregate of 60 per cent and above also showed an improvement at 3,60,722 candidates in 2008 against 3,29,091 in 2007.

Students from Namakkal district, which produced the good scoring students, secured the first three state ranks this year too.

This year two students, a girl and a boy, secured the state first rank. R Dharani of Vidhya Vikas Girls Higher Secondary School, Thiruchengode in Namakkal district and M Rajeshkumar of St Joseph's Higher Secondary School in Chengalpattu shared the first rank, scoring 1,182 marks out of 1,200.

Similarly, A Ramya of KKNG HSS Erode district and Kumara Vikram of Vidhya Vikas in Namakkal district shared the state second rank, scoring 1,181 out of 1,200 marks.

A Chennai girl, Asha Ganesan of Anna Adarsh scored the highest total of 1,191 out of 1,200, but she could not secure the state first rank as she had studied French as her second language.

A total of 6,41,230 candidates appeared for the examination with 4,96,494 or 84.4 per cent clearing them.
 
The state ranks of candidates with Tamil as first language are as follows: Dharani R of Vidhyavikas GHSS Thiruchengode in Namakkal and Rajeshkumar M of St Joseph's HSS in Chengalpattu share the first rank with a total marks of 1,182 each. Ramya A of KKNG HSS in Eorde and Thalabathik Kumara Vikram S of Vidya Vikash MHSS V Hoorampaty in Namakkal shared the second rank with a total of 1181 marks each.

Deepa K of SRVG HSS at Rasipuram in Namakkal secured the third place with a total of 1,180 marks.
